FAQ

About the calculator

Which tax rates does this use?

SARS's rates for the 2026/27 tax year (1 March 2026 to 28 February 2027): the income tax table, the primary, secondary and tertiary rebates, the medical scheme fees tax credit and, from age 65, the additional medical credit on medical aid contributions.

Is this an exact figure?

No. It is an estimate for a South African tax resident earning a salary for the full year. It does not include fringe benefits (such as a company car or employer contributions to medical aid or a pension), travel allowances, interest, dividends, capital gains, rental, business or foreign income, lump sums, leave or severance pay, donations, out-of-pocket medical expenses, or disability credits. It is not tax advice, and think.Prudence accepts no responsibility for decisions based on it. For an exact figure, send it to us.

How does a bonus change the monthly figures?

With a bonus, the monthly figures are averaged over 12 months, bonus included. In practice more tax comes off in the month the bonus is paid.

How are retirement contributions treated?

Your own pension, provident and retirement annuity contributions are deductible up to 27.5% of your income, capped at R430,000 a year. Anything above that carries over to the next year.

Do you file tax returns?

Yes. Filing fees start at R850 plus VAT for a simple return.
